What is Copywriting?
Copywriting is all the publicized written material for a company or brand. This can include, but isn’t limited to, blog posts, tag lines, social media posts, website content and all different kinds of advertising. A copywriter is the person who does all the writing. Sometimes a copywriter will specialize in social media copy or they might specialize in something very specific, like ghost writing for healthcare related companies.
So how does copywriting play into the big picture of a company’s brand? Copywriting goes hand-in-hand with the visuals of a brand. Images and graphics are what grab someone’s attention but it’s the copy that keeps their attention. When a brand’s copy is written well, it has the capability of making their customers feel connected to them which inspires them to take action. This is why companies pay big bucks to hire copywriters; they know that a brand’s true personality shines through in their words. A copywriter is able to translate your business’ personality by using keywords and phrases that help to make up a business’ unique brand voice. A brand voice is the tone that all the copy is written in for the simple reason of resonating with a target market.
Copywriting is a service I offer to my clients and to be honest, it’s one of my favorite things to add to a web design project. There are so many things to do and pictures to paint when I am given the freedom to write for my clients. I am always striving to improve my writing and therefore, I keep an eye out for inspiration from companies who have perfected the art of copywriting. Here are my top 3 favorite companies who’s clever copy is second to none:
Poo-Pourri
Overall Copywriting Champs
Poo-Pourri sells all-natural perfume sprays that you use to…well, keep the bathroom from smelling like a herd of cattle lived there for a week after you do your business. This could be an incredibly uncomfortable topic to market if it isn’t done carefully. However, with their hilarious copy that matches their “50’s housewives” vibe, they absolutely nail their copywriting.
One reason I gave them the “Overall Champ” award is because they really go the extra mile by branding every little bit of their copy. Everyone pays attention to what’s written on important web pages, like a Home page for example, but many companies neglect “less important” pages, like their Privacy Policy or FAQ’s. However, Poo-Pourri is no novice in the copywriting game and have their entire FAQ’s page branded with hilarious copy. If you want to see it for yourself, you can do so here:
Moo
Email Champs
Another common area companies forget to pay attention to is their automated emails, like a sales receipt or shipping notice. However, Moo is sure to make even their auto emails branded.
Moo is a printing company whose company mascot, Little Moo, is the adorable robot who sends their automated emails. Moo’s branding focuses on the cute factor which you can see evident here in one of their emails:
While this may not seem like much, it really is the little things that make your brand stand out. If you would like to visit their website, you can do so here:
Taco Bell
Social Media Champs
Although I’m not a fan of their food, Taco Bell knows what they are doing in regards to their social media copy. They are so funny, it makes me wish I liked their food more. Taco Bell knows exactly who their target market is and they have honed in on them by using witty humor and quick comebacks on their social media platforms.
An article on the website Ranker lists out Taco Bell’s best tweets and, if you have only have time to read 1 article today, please let this be it:
