My Inspiration to Become a Web Designer
With Mother's Day being just a few days ago, I was inspired to share the story of why I became a web designer! Before I dive in, please allow me to introduce my mother:
Her name is "Mom" (Glenda to others) and she is, hands down, the sweetest person you will ever meet. She is the central point to this story, which I'm sure you have gathered by now.
When I was just 5 years old, my mom signed my sister and me up for ice skating lessons. She knew nothing about the sport of figure skating but the few times she had taken us skating on a pond near our house, it was nearly impossible to get us off. So after seeing our natural interest for it, she did some research and found a local skating club.
As I progressed towards the end of group classes, I was ready to enter the world of competitive figure skating. However, for those of you not familiar to the world of figure skating, this is a ridiculously complicated transition for those that are new to the sport. My mom was overwhelmed, and with every question she asked, 15 more arose in it's place.
One day, a fellow skating mom took her aside and answered all her questions. She patiently explained the system of figure skating while guiding my mom through her sea of seemingly endless questions. This simple gesture meant so much to my mom that she still talks about this woman from time to time. Although the gesture was simple, it made a big impact on me when I saw how much it meant to my mom. I realized that someday, I want to be like that woman and help people in the same way she helped my mom.
Fast forward 18 years and countless experiences with poorly run organizations, I finally found my answer.
A company's website is usually two things:
A potential customer's first experience
The central communication hub for existing customers
When a website is built properly, it becomes your most valuable, unpaid employee. Current members can stay up-to-date with announcements, questions can be answered all hours of every day and your online reputation is defined and enhanced when a website is created properly. I am able to help organize thoughts and choose the best solution for each unique situation. Whenever I am able to take the confusion out of what can be a complicated process, I consider it a job well done and I can only hope that I made a positive impact in the same way a skating mom did for my mom so many years ago.
Have you found your calling in life? Maybe it's only temporary or maybe it's something you've wanted to do since you were just a wee little one. Whatever the case, I want to hear all about it in the comments!
I can't wait to connect.
With love,
- Heather
