Embracing Life’s Chaos
If I’ve never been a passenger in your car, you’re lucky. I’m the world’s worst (best?) backseat driver and no matter how hard I try, “The lights turning red!” or “There’s a car in your blindspot!” always finds a way to appear. The truth is, I love to be in control. Whether it’s driving, preparing for a group presentation or choosing a seat on my flight, I like to be the one that does it. So when you consider how much in life is out of our control, it’s probably obvious that this is something I struggle with. One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn is that nothing in this life is guaranteed.
I was raised on the American dream: “If you work hard enough, anything is possible.” While I have faithfully lived by this motto, I’ve still failed. A lot. I’ve felt the sting of disappointment and I’ve had moments where life has been flat out unfair no matter how hard I’ve worked. Now, I’m not here to tear down the American dream; I still believe in the power of consistent hard work! However, there is a lot of uncertainty when it comes to finding opportunities. Hard work is important but there still needs to be a spark of Divine intervention for an opportunity to align with that hard work.
Life is not fair; but it never claimed to be.
Sometimes things work out just like we hoped; sometimes they get ripped away from us for no good reason; and other times, they end up better than we ever could have imagined. We all entered this world with nothing but our bare little bodies and that’s exactly how we will leave (just slightly larger in size if we’re lucky). Everything else that happens is like a wild ride filled with possibilities and packed with uncertainty. It’s important to remember that this life does not owe us anything. Just like we came in with nothing and will leave with nothing, we are guaranteed nothing. So while I still struggle with so much being out of my control, I’m learning to embrace it. Accepting it has made failure easier to swallow and those few, beautiful moments taste that much sweeter.
