Behind-the-Scenes of Running My Business

When someone finds out I work from home, I tend to get very mixed reactions. Some don't care and others are mesmerized by the idea that I could essentially live my whole life without ever leaving my apartment. If you land on the side of "I don't care what your life looks like, I just came here to learn things", I suggest you pop on over to a different post (like this one). But for those who are curious to know what running my business looks like, this post is for you!

To begin, here is a list of rolls I fulfill each week to keep my business afloat:

  • Business Manager

  • Finances/Accountant

  • Continuing Education

  • Project Manager

  • Marketing/Communications

  • Web Designer/Graphic Designer/Copywriter

You may have noticed that my title of "Web Designer" is only one of many things that I do each week. When I first realized that client work was a sliver of what I actually do, I was overwhelmed and struggled to get it all done. After a lot of trial and error, I divided up my responsibilities into a weekly schedule. Since doing this, I have been much more successful at balancing everything that needs to get done. So, with that said, here is what a normal week looks like for me:

Monday

Business Manager, Finances, Marketing, Project Manager, Continuing Education

I like to classify Monday's as my "Business Day". This is the day where I budget, write my own marketing materials (blogs, emails, social media posts, etc.) and make a plan for the work I need to get done by Friday. Monday is also the day that I take an online course or watch videos to sharpen my skills. Right now, I am working to improve my Photoshop skills by taking a course through the Academy of Film, Fashion and Design. Working in technology means that my job is always changing and if I want to stay relevant and on top of my game, continuing my education is nonnegotiable.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Web Designer/Graphic Designer/Copywriter

These are my "Client Work Days". Because I plan out my week on Monday, I know exactly what needs to get done and how to make that happen. This part of the week really is my favorite. Whatever projects I am working on, the bulk of them get done during these days.

Friday

Communications, Project Manager

Fridays are the days that I wrap up projects for the week. I make a note of everything I have done, check to make sure I am on track to finishing on time and write myself notes for when I pick back up on Monday. In case I fall behind on any projects, I use Friday to catch up on them. I write each client a Weekly Update to let them know what I accomplished and ask for their feedback on it. You may also be familiar with my Facebook Friday's where I hop on Facebook live and answer any questions someone may have for me. (If you've never joined me on a Facebook live, you can see all my past videos here.)

And there you have it! That is what a typical work week in my life looks like. Now that I have shared my own personal schedule, I'm curious to hear what you have found that works in your own business? I am always looking to improve and I would love to hear your own insight.

I can't wait to hear from you!

With love,

- Heather
