Happy, Happy December!
And just like that, we’re in the final month of the year! For me, December means cold temperatures, cozy mornings, playing in the snow and, my personal favorite, the holiday season. I love the holiday’s because everyone’s responsibilities come to a halt for those few glorious days at the end of the month. I love the food, the decorations, the beautiful lights strewn up around the city and the precious time I get to spend with my loved ones.
However, I know this can also be a stressful time of year for a variety of reasons. Maybe finances are tight and you can’t buy that toy your son has been eyeing. Maybe you have a bad relationship with your parents and you’re painfully spending Christmas without them. Or maybe you’re just nervous to go home and answer questions about your life. There’s always someone who asks the probing, personal questions that make you wish for pajamas, ice cream and Netflix. They could be about your “interesting” career choice, the fact that you aren't married (or have been too many times), that you don’t have children, or rather, too many children *sigh* and who knows what else. Those innocently asked questions that are anything but innocent would get under anyone’s skin.
No matter what awaits you at the end of December, I encourage you to stand tall and not let anything or anyone dampen your holiday season. If buying gifts isn’t in the budget, give the gift of time and take your family to the park for the day! If you’re missing someone this holiday season, you could reach out or spend it with someone else you love dearly. After all, true family doesn’t need to share DNA. And finally, don’t panic if you find yourself at the center of holiday gossip. Consider it your good deed for the season! Otherwise, what else would the poor people talk about? The weather?! Bless you for helping them fill the silence.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of the year,
-Heather
